The Shortlist System: how we get you recommended.

Every buyer, whether they use Google, ChatGPT or Perplexity, ends up with a shortlist. Three to five names. The Shortlist System is the method we use to get clients onto that list and keep them there — across classic search and AI answers, with one plan and one set of numbers.

We built The Shortlist System because the old way of thinking about search — rank for keywords, get clicks — no longer describes how buyers find suppliers. Today a buyer asks a question, gets a summarised answer with a few names in it, and investigates those names. If you're not one of them, the rest of your marketing is invisible. The system has four stages, each with its own deliverables and measures.

1. Foundation

Before anything else, every engine has to be able to crawl, render, index and trust your site, and understand who you are. This is technical SEO plus the entity work most agencies skip: consistent business facts everywhere, structured data that confirms them, and clean access for the crawlers you want to be read by. Measure: index coverage, Core Web Vitals, entity consistency score.

2. Answers

We map the questions buyers ask at each stage — discovery, comparison, decision — and make sure there's one clear page that answers each one in the shape engines expect. That's AEO in practice: answer-first structure, specific claims, schema that mirrors the content. Measure: questions with a dedicated answer page, snippet and AI Overview capture.

3. Trust

Being an answer isn't enough; engines need reasons to prefer you. Trust is the third-party layer: reviews, listings on the sources engines retrieve from, mentions in comparison articles and roundups, links from relevant sites, and consistent presence in the places a model checks before naming you. This is where GEO and classic authority building meet. Measure: trusted-source presence, review profile, referring domains.

4. Measurement

The system is only useful if you can see it working. Every month we re-run your buyer question set across Google, Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini and record who's on the shortlist, in what order, with which citations. That sits alongside your organic rankings, traffic and enquiries in one report. Measure: shortlist inclusion rate, share of voice versus named competitors, enquiries.

Why it works

The four stages map directly onto how retrieval and generation actually happen: can the engine read you, do you answer the question, does the web vouch for you, and is it measurably moving. Every piece of work we do fits one of those stages, which keeps the programme focused and the reporting honest.

FAQs

Straight answers.

Is The Shortlist System a product or a method?

A method. It's how we structure every engagement, and it's what the monthly report is organised around. You don't buy it separately — it's built into our programmes.

Does it replace SEO?

No. Foundation is SEO. The system extends SEO into answer features and AI assistants with a single plan and measurement.

How do you define our 'shortlist' questions?

With you: typically 30–80 questions a real buyer would ask at discovery, comparison and decision stages, drawn from search data, your sales team and AI assistant testing.
