Understanding the scores
What DA, PA, DR and Spam Score really mean.
All four are third-party metrics. Google does not use them to rank pages. They are still a fast, consistent way to compare two websites, judge a link opportunity and spot a risky backlink profile.
| Score | Source | Measures | Scale |
|---|---|---|---|
| Domain Authority (DA) | Moz | Ranking strength of the whole domain | 1–100 |
| Page Authority (PA) | Moz | Ranking strength of one URL (here, the homepage) | 1–100 |
| Domain Rating (DR) | Ahrefs | Strength of the domain's backlink profile | 0–100 |
| Spam Score | Moz | Share of sites with similar features that Google penalised or banned | 0–100% |
DA, PA and DR are logarithmic. Going from 20 to 30 is much easier than going from 70 to 80, so compare sites in the same niche rather than chasing a fixed number.
Worked example
How to read a result, using a real one.
We ran amazon.com through this checker on 3 November 2026. It returned DA 95, PA 90, DR 96 and a Spam Score of 2%, with about 2.39 million referring domains.
- Start with DA and DR together. Both are above 80, so two separate link indexes agree the domain is exceptionally strong. When DA and DR disagree by 15+ points, look at referring domains to see which picture is closer.
- Check Spam Score next. At 2% it is in the low-risk band. A high authority score with a high Spam Score is a classic sign of a link network, so treat that combination with caution.
- Use referring domains as a reality check. Authority comes from many different sites linking in. A high score with very few referring domains usually means the number is stale or inflated.
Use cases

Check your own domain monthly to see whether your content and link building are paying off.
Backlink audits
Spot spammy domains linking to you and decide what to clean up or disavow.
Buying a domain
Check an expired or for-sale domain's authority and spam signals before you pay for it.
Client reporting
Show clients a simple authority baseline before and after an SEO campaign.
Improve your scores
How to raise DA, PA and DR and lower spam.
- Earn links from more unique sites. Ten links from ten relevant domains do more than a hundred links from one. Digital PR, original research and expert commentary work well.
- Publish content people cite. Data studies, free tools and in-depth guides attract links without outreach.
- Clean up toxic links. Review spammy backlinks, ask for removal where you can and disavow the worst.
- Fix technical SEO. Broken pages, redirect chains and weak internal linking waste the authority you already have.
- Point internal links at money pages. Link from your most-linked pages to the pages you want to rank.
- Give it time. Link indexes refresh about monthly, so expect months, not weeks, before scores move.
DA vs DR
Why two tools show different numbers.
DA comes from Moz and DR comes from Ahrefs. Each company crawls the web with its own crawler and weighs links with its own formula, so the same site can score 34 on one and 41 on the other. Neither is "right". Compare scores from the same provider, and use them to rank sites against each other rather than as an absolute grade.
FAQ
Common questions.
What is Domain Authority (DA)?
A 1–100 score from Moz that predicts how well a whole website is likely to rank. Higher means a stronger link profile. It is a comparison metric, not a Google ranking factor.
What is Page Authority (PA)?
The same 1–100 Moz scale, but for one specific URL. This checker reports the homepage's Page Authority.
What is Domain Rating (DR)?
A 0–100 score from Ahrefs that measures the strength of a domain's backlink profile. Like DA, it is useful for comparing sites, not as a Google metric.
What is Spam Score?
Moz's estimate of the percentage of sites with similar features that Google has penalised or banned. 0–30% is low risk, 31–60% medium and 61–100% high. A high score is a warning sign, not a penalty.
What is a good DA score?
It depends on your competitors. In this checker 0–20 is weak, 21–40 fair, 41–60 good, 61–80 strong and 81–100 excellent. Compare against the sites you want to outrank.
Why are my DA and DR different?
Moz and Ahrefs use different crawlers and formulas, so the same site gets different numbers. Compare DA with DA and DR with DR.
How do I improve my scores?
Earn links from more relevant, trusted websites, publish content worth citing, fix broken pages and clean up toxic links. Scores move slowly, usually over months.
Is Domain Authority a Google ranking factor?
No. DA, PA and DR are third-party scores. Google does not use them. They are still useful because strong sites tend to have the kind of links and content that do help rankings.
Can I check a competitor's website?
Yes. Enter any public domain and compare its scores with your own.
Can I check a single page instead of a domain?
This checker scores domains. If you paste a page URL, it checks the domain that page belongs to and shows the homepage's Page Authority.
Is this tool really free?
Yes. There is no signup. Each visitor gets 10 free checks a day so we can keep the tool free for everyone.
How often are scores updated?
Link indexes refresh about monthly, so a new site or fresh links can take several weeks to show up.
